What is multifoil insulation and how does it work?
Multifoil insulation consists of multiple layers of low-emissivity foil, wadding, and foam. Unlike traditional insulation that works by trapping air, multifoil works by reflecting radiant heat — the dominant form of heat transfer in buildings. By reflecting radiant heat back into the space and reducing conduction through the layers, multifoil achieves excellent thermal resistance in a fraction of the thickness of traditional products.
Is SuperFoil insulation approved under UK Building Regulations?
Yes. SuperFoil products carry BBA (British Board of Agrément) and LABC (Local Authority Building Control) certification, giving them the independent verification required for Building Regulations compliance. When installed correctly, SuperFoil insulation can be used to achieve compliant U-values across a wide range of roof, wall, and floor applications.
How does SuperFoil compare to mineral wool insulation?
SuperFoil and mineral wool both achieve thermal insulation, but in different ways. Mineral wool is bulky and works by trapping air; SuperFoil is thin and works by reflecting heat. SuperFoil's key advantages are: much thinner profile (50–80mm vs 200–300mm for equivalent mineral wool), acts as a vapour control layer — mineral wool requires a separate VCL, doesn't absorb moisture or harbour mould, easier and quicker to install, and suitable for shallow roof spaces where mineral wool simply won't fit.
Can SuperFoil insulation be used in a loft conversion?
Absolutely. Loft conversions are one of our most common applications. SuperFoil's thin profile makes it ideal for insulating between and below rafters — maximising headroom and living space while meeting Building Regulations thermal requirements.
Do I need planning permission to insulate my roof or walls?
In most cases, insulation work is carried out under Permitted Development and does not require planning permission. However, all structural or regulated building work — including loft conversions — does require Building Regulations approval. We can advise on your specific situation and liaise with building control as needed.
How long does a SuperFoil installation take?
This depends on the size and complexity of the project. A straightforward roof insulation for a standard semi-detached house typically takes one to two days. Larger or more complex installations may take longer. We'll give you a realistic timeframe as part of your free survey.
Will insulating my roof cause condensation problems?
If installed correctly, no. SuperFoil insulation acts as a vapour control layer when sealed at all joints and laps, preventing moisture-laden internal air from reaching cold surfaces and condensing. In some scenarios — particularly cold roofs — we may specify a breathable variant. We always carry out a condensation risk assessment as part of our survey process.
Is SuperFoil suitable for older properties?
Yes, with appropriate specification. Older buildings often have different moisture management requirements compared to modern constructions. In some cases, breathable SuperFoil products are more appropriate to avoid trapping moisture in existing structures. What is the difference between fire rated and standard multifoil insulation?
Standard SuperFoil multifoil insulation is suitable for the vast majority of residential applications. Fire-rated SuperFoil carries additional fire-resistance classification (Euro Class B, Bs1 d0) and is required in commercial buildings, certain residential conversions, and any project where building control specifies a specific fire classification. We will always confirm whether fire rating is required for your project.
